Organisers of the 2023-4 Clipper Race have confirmed the Bay of Cádiz as another stopover on its global route.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will be visiting Puerto Sherry in the Bay of Cádiz. It will be the first stop on its circumnavigation and also the first time Spain will feature as a destination on the event’s race circuit in its 27-year history.

The Clipper 2023-24 Race will begin from Portsmouth, UK, on 3 September 2023. This is only the second time that Portsmouth has featured on the Clipper Race route (the last time was in 2000), and the upcoming event will see the first on-the-water, public participation race start event since 2017 in Liverpool.

The 2019-20 edition resumed in 2022 after an almost two-year delay caused by the pandemic. 

The fleet will then sail 1,200 nautical miles to Puerto Sherry, ahead of crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Punta del Este in Uruguay. The race will take 11 months.

The global yacht race sees adventurers from diverse backgrounds face the exceptional challenge of racing across the world’s oceans on board a 70ft yacht. With 350 plus occupations across the participants, anyone can sign up for specific legs or the full 40,000nm circumnavigation. Many race crew have no prior sailing experience before undertaking the intensive compulsory four-stage training programme.

This is the first time that the Clipper Race has visited Spain and the location is perfect for our intrepid race crews to recuperate, enjoy and prepare for the next race of 5,300nm into the southern hemisphere”.

Seven Spanish crew are participating in the Clipper 2023-24 Race, including an airline pilot, university professor and an IT software engineer.

The Clipper Race fleet is expected to arrive in Puerto Sherry from 9–15 September 2023.
