WorkBoat names its 2022 ‘boat of the year’
A firefighting, patrol and rescue boat, Monjed 2, has been voted 2022’s Boat of the Year at the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. The 25.9-metre aluminium vessel was designed by Walker Marine Design and built by Metal Craft Marine.
Only boats that appeared in WorkBoat magazine from December 2021 to November 2022 could be considered for the prize.
James Walker, designer and managing director at Walker Marine Design says, “It’s been a real pleasure working with MetalCraft Marine Inc on the Monjed 2 fire, rescue and patrol boat. We are delighted to have won the 2022 Significant Boat of the Year award, this is the start of some exciting projects we have planned for the US market.”
Walker Marine Design specialises in the design of high-speed vessels for the commercial, leisure, and defence sectors.
Monjed 2 was built for the Kuwait Fire Force. Its main propulsion comes from two MTU 10V 2000 M86 diesel engines, producing 1,360 hp at 2,450 rpm each. The mains connect to twin MJP DRB 500 waterjets through ZF 665 two-speed marine gears. The propulsion package gives the vessel a running speed of 27.8 knots, and the boat is fitted with a Sleipner SidePower SH550 bow thruster.
The Monjed 2 features two Jason fire pumps, spewing 5,000 gpm each through telescopic monitors that extend 40′ above the deck. MJP also takes care of the controls and steering responsibilities with its Jet Master 1 package. There is a Raymarine Axiom, Setcom, and Teledyne FLIR electronics suite aboard the boat. Capacities include 1,200 gallons of diesel fuel; 100 gallons of water, and 800 gallons of firefighting foam. The ship’s service power is the responsibility of twin Kohler 125EFOZCJ Decision Maker 3500 gensets.
