Where to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee on the water
The UK is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a four-day bank holiday weekend (2-5 June) and there are plenty of ways to celebrate. Marine Industry News has put together this list of places and events where boating enthusiasts can enjoy this historic occasion on the water.
Jubilee Afternoon Tea Cruise – Poole Quay

Celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on the waters surrounding Poole by hopping on board with Poole City Cruises.

The Topsham Community Association has organised a programme of events over the four-day Bank Holiday, including a race on the River Exe.

Illuminated River launches a display by artist Leo Villareal. Nine central London bridges will light up in a sequence of evolving tones of platinum and purple. The special edition will be unveiled at sunset on 02 June and will run each night until 2:00am on Monday 06 June.

PS Medway Queen will be open on all four days over the bank holiday weekend, with ship tours, a sale of maritime prints, and photos and cream teas served on board.
Humber Platinum Jubilee Flotilla
02 June 2022
A flotilla of 70 vessels will set sail from Hull Marina on the evening of Thursday 02 June, and sail to the Humber Bridge as a prelude to the lighting of the Hessle Town Council Beacon.
On The Water Jubilee Cider Festival

Celebrating the Queens Jubilee with local live music, British ciders and small batch local gins. There are over 15 different ciders to try, plus draught lager and handmade cocktails.

The Mermaid Challenge will take place at Tinside Lido in Plymouth, on Thursday 02 June at 9:30am. The Mermaid Challenge will be to set the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of mermaids. Mermen and merchildren are also welcome.
A Night by the Prom – Jubilee Pool

A Night at the Prom takes place on the first night of the platinum Jubilee Celebrations. The evening will include music, drinks and celebrations in one of Cornwall’s most unique venues, Jubilee Pool Penzance. The evening will lead up to the lighting of the beacon at the deep end of the pool.

Boarding will take place from a Central London Pier and cruisers can see panoramic views from both the twin decks while enjoying a freshly prepared royal afternoon tea.

Platinum Jubilee Medway River Pageant

Featuring a parade from the lower reaches, up to Sun Pier, Chatham and culminating with ‘the grand cacophony’ at 3:30pm – a wall of sound from ships to shore.

Fleet vessels will be taking part in a ships salute on Saturday 04 June. Simultaneously sounding their sirens at 12:00pm, the event will see Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and recreational vessels celebrating Her Majesty’s service to the country and close ties with the maritime industry.

A ceremony will be held to rename Aspen Island on Lake Burley Griffin to Queen Elizabeth II Island. This ceremony will also include a dedication of the new Queen Elizabeth Water Gardens, which will transform the nearby foreshore and improve water quality in Lake Burley Griffin.

Bridlington RNLI is holding a Queens Platinum Jubilee Street party, starting at 10am on Saturday 04 June.
Coxswain Steve Emmerson says: “We’d welcome everyone to come along and enjoy a very British street party atmosphere, with music from the decades of the Queens reign, there will be live music to dance to, tea, coffee and soft drinks, plus Bridlington Gold Radio will be broadcasting ‘live’.”

A main pool swim ticket for the Jubilee Jamboree event costs just one pound. Radio Cornwall and Coast FM who will also be broadcasting live from the lido.

The Jubilee Flotilla of water-craft will take to the water at 2:30pm in the bay, with celebrated and private vessels representing all parts of the area’s coastal community. Visitors are invited to watch from the shores as the water teems with maritime action.

A ‘Right Royal Docks Jubilee!’ features grime artists, world-class ballet dancers, sculptors, painters, footballers, a 25-boat flotilla, street parties and a free concert called ‘A Right Royal Docks Knees Up’.

The Solent’s boating community is invited to take part in a celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at Cowes on Saturday 6 August. Yacht and sailing clubs in the Solent region can join in the event by ‘saving the date’ and registering their interest in attending by emailing mail@rys.org.uk.
The event will also help raise money to provide opportunities for disabled people to get afloat by supporting Wetwheels. Readers can donate here.
Wetwheels recently held its first ‘barrier-free’ boating weekend, helping nearly 100 disabled sailors get out on to the water.
