Boat burns on Danube

Around 20 firefighters, four fire engines and a fire boat were reportedly called to a marina in Budapest, Hungary, yesterday (14 February 2023), when 25-metre Mangusta 80 yacht Le St-James burst into flames at its berth on the river Danube.

Video taken from the scene and shared on social media shows thick smoke and flames erupting from the burning boat, which was moored at the Wiking Yacht Club marina, near Hajógyári Island — the location of the popular Sziget music festival.

A statement issued by Wiking Yacht Club confined that the fire had started at 12.30pm local time, with firefighters arriving shortly afterwards.

The club says the fire had started in the yacht’s cockpit, and no injuries were reported. All of the boats in the vicinity were moved to a safe location, and there is no damage to the marina. Damage to Le St-James is however significant.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, with more details to be released in due course.

Last year, a massive marina fire destroyed four luxury yachts in Greece, after a large blaze broke out at Gouvia Marina on the island of Corfu. The 49m superyacht 007 also capsized in Greece in September after running aground in Kythnos. The same month, the 28m Sunseeker Black Diamond was destroyed in a fire at the IMS Shipyard in Saint-Mandrier, France.
