UK boatbuilder drives new initatives to boost marine industry talent
British boatbuilder Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding has announced the launch of several initiatives to nurture talent and expand its workforce. The Cornish firm, known for its craftsmanship in modern and classic boat design, says it is taking proactive steps to address the industry’s growing need for skilled professionals.
At the core of this strategy is its apprenticeship programme, having recently welcomed the second cohort. Partnering with Cornwall Marine Network, the company offers a unique City & Guilds Level 3 Boatbuilder qualification – the only one in Cornwall. This 48-month programme provides a comprehensive blend of hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge to equip the next generation of marine professionals with necessary skills.
The programme kicks off with an intensive three-week ‘practice and play’ period at Cokwell’s southwest shipyard in Ponsharden. Here, apprentices aged 16 and above learn foundational skills such as joinery, fibreglass wet layup and machinery competency, building confidence before transitioning to the workplace.
Paul Wickes MBE, CEO at Cornwall Marine Network, emphasises the value of the programme: “I completed a four-year apprenticeship after I left school, and it has provided the solid foundation on which I have developed my career ever since. Through our City & Guilds-accredited programme with Cockwells, apprentices develop skills across production, manufacturing, service and construction, which will equally prepare them for a diverse array of jobs in boatbuilding and the broader marine industry going forward.” Once completed, apprentices will have the chance to explore a range of career options, such as marine engineers, naval architects and project managers.
Cockwells is also reaching out to younger students to garner interest in marine careers. The company will be present at the Penryn College Careers Fair on 23 October, where they will connect with students of all ages to discuss qualifications, skills and experiences essential for the boatbuilding industry.
Having recently integrated with the Pendennis Group, which acquired a majority stake in Cockwells, they will actively seek skilled workers and support staff while participating in the Pendennis shipyard’s recruitment open evening, from 17:00 to 20:00 on 23 October. Dean Short, Cockwell’s managing director, invites interested individuals: “Whether you are an experienced tradesperson or looking to start a new career, we invite you to attend the Pendennis Shipyard recruitment evening to learn more about joining us.”
The firm is also set to attend Falmouth Marine School’s annual industry day on 27 November.
