Larger sizes for Orbit Winches as Ronstan develops range
Larger sizes, three-speed configurations and E1 Electric winches are a few of the new additions to Ronstan’s Orbit Winch range.
The first Orbit Winches released in 2023 were suitable for boats up to around 12m. They marked the debut of the patented QuickTrim self-tailer. The significance of this innovation was acknowledged with the Orbit Winch being named as a 2023 DAME Award joint category winner.
The range has now been extended with two larger sizes: 45QT and 50QT to fit on larger boats of 14m or more. Both can be specified with either a two-speed or a three-speed configuration.
Three-speed winches can offer significant advantages in racing and cruising situations that require rapid line retrieval. In the initial stages of trimming or hoisting sails, the high-speed first gear reduces the time and effort required to adjust sails efficiently. The winch can be shifted to the second and third gears as load increases, using their greater mechanical advantage for precise control of heavy loads. The added versatility provided by the extra gear results in improved performance and safety on the water.
Ronstan’s E1 Electric Orbit Winches are available in sizes 30QT and 40QT with 12V or 24V configurations, plus, electric conversion kits are available for existing winches in these sizes.
The company says that installation is simple, with no external control box required. Safety features include overload protection, thermal overload protection, accidental start protection, reverse polarity protection, and more.
“The new Ronstan Orbit Winches are a natural progression in the range,” says Jason Belben, director of SailTek which supplies Ronstan in the UK. “They’re a collaboration between Ronstan’s Andersen factory in Denmark and head office in Australia. They combine the best features of the respected Andersen stainless winch into a fresh-thinking, modern, performance-orientated, lightweight aluminium winch.”
Ronstan is based in Melbourne, Australia and has 140 employees worldwide with offices in Rhode Island, California, Florida, Indonesia, and Denmark.
