Jet-propelled surfboard tops speeds of over 55km/h
Singaporean startup The Kinetic Option (TKO) is making a splash with the company’s first product – the TKO 001 jet surfboard.
The TKO 001 is a battery-operated surfboard that can be used on fresh and saltwater. Each ride lasts for an average of 40 minutes, thanks to a removable plug-in lithium battery pack, which generates up to 12kW of power. The company says the TKO 001 jet surfboard can reach speeds above 55km/h.
The 18kg surfboard is crafted in lightweight carbon fibre and measures 1.8 metres long. It comes with a wireless remote with various pre-set configurations and speed settings, allowing users to manoeuvre the board at a speed according to their skill set and comfort level.
The TKO 001 includes foot bindings, comparable to those on a snowboard, to offer increased stability.
An automatic kill switch and accompanying leash mean the surfboard stops functioning once the user is no longer detected on the board.

“We believe that silent, clean propulsion is the future for many marine applications from the coast to inland waterways and reservoirs,” says TKO co-founder and general manager Daniel He. “We are very excited to finally be able to present the TKO 001 to the public after more than a year of building, testing and fine-tuning.”
He says the board was built with the intention of providing options for watersport lovers who may not be able to travel to a surf beach on the weekends for a surf session. “With the TKO 001, all you need is access to a large body of water, and you can enjoy hours of fun on the water,” he adds.
The TKO 001 will cost around US$12,000, and is expected to be delivered in late 2022.
