Cowes Week at Commodores House
Cowes Week is one of the longest running and most successful sporting events and is a key highlight of the British sporting summer, so where better to start the month-long celebrations which will highlight the extraordinary life of boat designer and sailor, Uffa Fox, 50 years on.
Whilst Uffa was mainly recognised as an award-winning sailor and ground-breaking yacht designer, he also become a celebrity in his lifetime, famous for his antics and sense of humour, culminating in an appearance on ‘This is Your Life’ in 1963.
During Cowes Week 2022, Uffa’s beautiful old boat shed on the lower level of Commodores House on Cowes High Street, will open its doors for the public to enjoy a fascinating exhibition with artifacts from Uffa’s house and life. He was a well-known gentleman in the nautical world but there is still many a story yet to be shared!
Commodores House proprietor John Terry said: “I was lucky enough to sail with Uffa as a youngster. He used to live in the Commodores House and we wanted to share stories in an exhibition that reflected his memorable life. He had a great sense of adventure, and above all, a sense of fun.”
You do not just have to be a sailing enthusiast to join in the antics during the week as there will be a BBQ of gastronomic delights on the terrace plus a bar featuring cocktails such as Sex on the Solent, all thanks to local Cowes restaurant, Gastronomy.
The venue, located within the beautiful pink house backing onto the River Medina, will be open to the public free of charge between 11am – 8pm on 2 – 4 August and 11am – 3pm on Friday 5 ahead of a ticketed Cowes Week party in the evening, featuring live music from local legends The JC and Angelina Fun Trio.
