Conservation Awareness Day returns to Buckler’s Hard
Meet people from local conservation groups at Buckler’s Hard as Conservation Awareness Day returns to the historic village on the banks of the Beaulieu River for its second year.
From kingfishers to kestrels, Buckler’s Hard, the Beaulieu River and its surrounding areas are home to such a diverse range of wildlife that it’s very easy to forget that you’re in the heavily populated South of England.
On Saturday 1st July discover how you can protect the environment around us with fun activities and informative displays in this picturesque 18thcentury shipbuilding village. Meet and chat with local organisations that are taking part including the RSPB, Forestry England, New Forest National Park, Wildlife Trust, Country Watch, Bird Aware Solent, Natural England, Maritime Archaeology Trust and many more.
Plus, junior conservationists are bound to enjoy the wide range of activities on offer with fun games throughout the day for the whole family, and the chance to learn the importance of doing what we can to help.
Whilst visiting, take a break from the July heat and feel the cool breeze as you hop aboard their seasonal river cruise. Keep an eye out for the resident wildlife including waders and wildfowl and listen closely to the engaging commentary that will reveal the fascinating history of the Beaulieu river and the creatures that inhabit its riverbanks.
Discover more about the maritime history of the village, by dropping into the Buckler’s Hard Museum – which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. A free exhibition in the Shipwright’s Workshop, ‘HMS Agamemnon’ – Navigating the Legend’ explains how nations are working together to preserve the world’s only surviving wreck of Nelson’s favourite ship built at Buckler’s Hard.
Drop anchor and find refreshments with the menu at The Captain’s Table, where you can tuck into a tasty lunch or sumptuous New Forest ice cream. Or for those after a fine dining experience, the Master Builder’s House can be found at the bottom of the Highstreet, offering fresh, seasonal food, good quality wines & ales, and good company.
Buckler’s Hard in the New Forest, Hampshire is accessible by foot, car, bike – or boat! The village is free to enter. For those arriving by vehicle, a parking charge applies, which helps maintain the heritage site. If you wish to explore the Buckler’s Hard Museum or River Cruise, a small admission charge applies.
