20,000 paddleboards recalled due to drowning hazard
Sports equipment company Surf 9 has issued a recall on more than 20,000 paddleboards sold in the United States and Canada. The recall is due to a potential drowning hazard following reports that the inflatable boards could deflate unexpectedly.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website posted the recall 29 December 2022.
The products affected include Body Glove Tandem Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board, ULI Inventor Inflatable Paddle Board, ULI Zettian Inflatable Supyak and ULI Lila Inflatable Supyak. The boards were sold exclusively at Costco Wholesale Warehouses.
According to the statement on the CPSC website, the recall came after Surf 9 received three reports of the Body Glove boards deflating. It says the glue used in the manufacturing process could separate at the seams and deflate the boards, posing a drowning hazard. No injuries have been reported so far.
The Body Glove boards were sold from December 2021 through July 2022 for about $630. The ULI boards were sold from July 2021 through July 2022 for between $700 and $800.
Consumers are being asked to return the boards to Costco for a full refund or contact Surf 9 for instructions on receiving a refund. Costco is contacting all known purchasers directly.
